I used the Bärenreiter Urtext score for typesetting this piece. Editorial corrections by the editor of the Bärenreiter score (Dietrich Berke) were clearly marked in the score and discarded during the typesetting process. I placed no editorial corrections of my own and tried to reproduce the score in the most faithful way. Some corrections might however be necessary if you want to perform this piece in a concert (for instance, bar 68 has a D# in the violin part which is likely to be a D).

There has been a great debate among the scolars about the origins of this piece. It is impossible not to compare it to the Divertimento KV. 563 (September 1788), one of Mozart's greatest masterpieces, which was scored also for a string trio. Einstein thought this piece was a preliminary sketch thrown away by Mozart in favour of the actual first movement of KV. 563. A possible cause, according to Einstein, would have been the relative "poorness" of the G major Trio when compared with the marvellous first movement of KV. 563. But a detailed research by Alan Tyson revealed that this piece was probably written in 1790-1791. Therefore, it is likely that this piece was written after the Divertimento KV. 563.

Even if the G major Trio does not reach the heights of the Divertimento KV. 563, it is a beautiful fragment which should deserve a lot more attention by concerto players. I've heard that the Complete Mozart Collection by Philips contains a recording of this trio. Apart from this, I am unaware of other recordings.
